Ferrum Fe

Ferrum (Fe) is an essential nutritional factor, necessary for the synthesis of hemoglobin - blood.

The Ferrum (Fe) measurement is part of the preventive Check Up for all ages to assess its adequate intake, and to detect possible malabsorption or blood loss diseases:

  1. Food low in Ferrum
  2. Gastrointestinal disorders (celiac disease, gastritis, ulcer, gastric bypass, medications, etc.)
  3. Increased needs (pregnancy, childhood, sports - physical exertion)
  4. Increased losses (fibroids, bowel cancers - gynecological, etc.)

Need to measure is suggested in :

a. Signs of deficiency

Indications of a long-term lack and urgent need for measurement are:

  1. Low values of hematocrit, hemoglobin, low mean red cell volume MCV
  2. Anemia symptoms such as looking pale, fatigue, weakness, headaches, feeling cold, shortness of breath on muscle exertion
  3. Hair loss, brittle nails

b. Signs of toxicity from excessive intake

The toxic load that shows symptoms:

  1. fatigue, loss of sexual desire
  2. Joint pain, stomach pain
  3. Liver disease, heart problems

c. Treatment monitoring:

Measuring ferrum is necessary periodically to assess the effectiveness of ferrum treatments or taking ferrum-rich supplements (eg echinacea).

Simple blood collection happens at any time of the day (7.30-19.30)

  1. Avoid ferrum supplements for 12 hours
  2. In case of fever, common cold, or acute phase inflammation (e.g. teeth-urinary tract infection), a period of 1 week should pass without symptoms before the measurement.
  1. The result is available the next working day.
  2. Possibility of urgent response in about 1 hour

The cost of a single test for Iron Fe is 5 euros.

The exam is prescribed at the EOPYY, with the participation of the examinee as defined in the referral (15%, unless otherwise stated)
