Ferritin is the main storehouse of iron in the body. It releases iron gradually for the general needs of the body and the necessary synthesis of hemoglobin - blood.

The measurement of ferritin is a part of the preventive Check Up for all ages to assess the adequate intake of iron, and the detection of possible malabsorption diseases or those presenting with blood loss:

• Food low in Ferrum
• Gastrointestinal disorders (celiac disease, gastritis, ulcer, gastric bypass, medications, etc.)
• Increased needs (pregnancy, childhood, sports - physical exertion)
• Increased losses (fibroids, bowel cancers - gynecological, etc.)

Indications of long-term iron deficiency and the urgent need to measure ferritin are:

1. Anemia symptoms such as looking pale, fatigue, weakness, headaches, feeling cold, shortness of breath on muscle exertion
2. Hair loss, brittle nails

There is also a need to measure the toxic load from iron that shows symptoms:

1. fatigue, loss of sexual desire
2. Joint pain, stomach pain
3. Liver disease, heart problems

Ferritin measurement is necessary periodically to assess the effectiveness of iron treatments or taking iron-rich supplements (eg echinacea).

Simple blood collection at any time of the day, without preparing food or avoiding medication

In case of fever, common cold, or acute phase inflammation (e.g. teeth-urinary tract infection), a period of 1 week should pass without symptoms before the measurement.
