Prostatitis

What is this?

Prostatitis is the condition of infection - inflammation of the prostate.

Prostatitis can be from imperceptible to very painful, and mainly affects men aged 30-50.

Prostatitis can be:

Chronic : They are the most common with symptoms that come and go over months-years.

The main symptoms are:

  1. Pain in the genital area, in the lower abdomen and during urination
  2. Need to urinate frequently, especially at night
  3. Sexual problems (erection, painful ejaculation)

Main cause

  1. Past prostatitis
  2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Acute phase with sudden and intense symptoms of infection and requiring treatment.

The main symptoms are:

  1. Pain in the genital area, during defecation and urination
  2. Anuria (needs immediate medical treatment), need to urinate frequently, especially at night

Main cause

  1. UTI, sexually transmitted diseases, anal intercourse.
  2. Anatomical bladder problems, use of urinary catheter, biopsy.

LABORATORY HEMATOLOGY TEST

Urine culture

It is used to rule out a possible urinary tract infection that gives similar symptoms.

Sperm culture

Detection of aerobic anaerobic microbes, chlamydia, mycoplasma, ureaplasma. Immediate diagnostic test in active prostatitis with immediate detection of possible infection. It is also used to observe the treatment.

Urinary cultures

Detection of aerobic anaerobic microbes, chlamydia, mycoplasma, ureaplasma. Indirect diagnostic test in active prostatitis. It is also used to observe the treatment

Prostate Antigen (PSA)

The values are increased in proportion to the intensity of the prostatitis. It can also be used to observe treatment progress

ADDITIONAL IMAGING TESTING

Transabdominal - rectal prostate ultrasound

Calculation of prostate volume, examination of morphology and perfusion. The intensity of the inflammation is assessed and possible calcifications from past prostatitis are checked.

It is used in the diagnosis of prostatitis and in monitoring the effectiveness of treatment

INFORMATION FOR LABORATORY CHECK

PREPARATION

For laboratory testing is required:

  1. Urine / semen culture: presentation of a morning urine / semen sample in a sterile pharmacy urine collector
  2. Urethral culture: taken with a special swab by the laboratory doctor. Set your appointment.
  3. PSA : simple blood draw at any time and without food preparation.

It is recommended for 3 days of abstinence from sexual activity – no massage and examination of the prostate

  1. cultures require 1-3 days to be completed
  2. The results for PSA are given within the day
