3 Things You Can Do to Manage COVID-19 at Home
Proper care and monitoring of a COVID-19 patient is crucial. Whether you have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic after a positive test, you should immediately inform your doctor for appropriate guidance.
Here are some additional measures and precautions you can take:
1. USE A PULSE OXIMETER DAILY
A pulse oximeter is a small device that is placed on your finger to measure your heart rate and oxygen saturation levels in your blood. It is very easy to use and can be purchased from your pharmacy. Monitoring oxygen saturation is important because some COVID-19 patients may have dangerously low oxygen levels without feeling short of breath or rapid breathing.
General guidelines for oxygen saturation measurements are as follows:
-
- 95% or higher: You have a normal amount of oxygen in your blood.
-
- 91-94%: Your blood oxygen level is lower than expected. Inform your doctor and monitor it together.
-
- 90% or lower: You are in a state of potential immediate danger. Inform your doctor immediately or go to a COVID-19 treatment unit, even if you feel well. There may not be enough time between feeling well and being in a life-threatening situation.
2. MEDICATION SUPPORT
Ask your doctor to be more relieved
-
Ask your doctor to relieve your cough with a medicinal suppressant. The cough associated with COVID-19 is dry and non-productive, so look for reasonable suppressants containing dextromethorphan.
-
- Manage body aches or reduce fever with ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Both are perfectly safe if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
3. VITAMIN D3
Studies indicate that vitamin D deficiency significantly increases the chances of COVID-19 patients being admitted to ICU and the risk of death. Given that a large percentage of the population in Greece ( >50%) has at least a mild deficiency in vitamin D, preventive supplementation is at least reasonable.
You can also take vitamin D with daily fish oil supplements, which might be the most effective way. Vitamin D is found abundantly in fatty fish such as sardines, salmon, or tuna, as well as in mushrooms.
