What are Antithyroid Antibodies?
Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) determines the maximum amount of iron that serum proteins can bind, thereby providing an indirect measure of transferrin levels.
Where Used
TIBC measurement is primarily used in confirmatory analyses for low ferritin levels and to document iron deficiency.
Iron deficiency can result from:
- Diet low in iron
- Gastrointestinal disorders (celiac disease, gastritis, ulcers, gastric bypass, medications, etc.)
- Increased needs (pregnancy, childhood, sports, physical exertion)
- Increased losses (fibroids, intestinal and gynecological cancers, etc.)
Indications of long-term iron deficiency include:
- Symptoms of anemia, such as pale complexion, fatigue, weakness, headaches, feeling cold, rapid breathing during physical exertion
- Hair loss, brittle nails
TIBC measurement is also used in cases of iron overload toxicity, which presents symptoms such as:
- Fatigue, loss of sexual desire
- Joint pain, stomach pain
- Liver disease, heart problems
Reference Values – Normal Laboratory Ranges
For adults (18-65 years), indicative values are:
Men: 208-400 µg/dL
Women: 250-380 µg/dL

Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) is an important measure used in clinical settings to assess the body’s ability to bind iron in the blood. Iron is an essential mineral used by the body for many biological functions, including the production of red blood cells and the functioning of the immune system. TIBC measures the total capacity of the blood to bind iron and consists of the measurement of the iron-binding capacity of transferrin, a protein carrier of iron, as well as the measurement of free available iron in the blood.
TIBC can be useful in many cases, including anemia, iron metabolism anemia, iron overload, dystrophic anemia, and other conditions affecting iron transport in the blood. An increase in TIBC may indicate the need for further laboratory tests for the diagnosis and management of related diseases.
Causes of high TIBC may include anemia, insufficient iron in the body, and degenerative diseases such as alcoholic liver disease and polycythemia.
Low TIBC pathology may include iron overload anemia, iron deficiency anemia, and specific conditions such as sideroblastic anemia. Additionally, low TIBC may indicate blood loss, drug-related anemias, or chronic disease anemias.
TIBC testing is usually included in a complete blood count and is typically analyzed in the clinical biochemistry laboratory. Tests measuring TIBC are reliable and relatively simple to perform.
Overall, TIBC is a vital tool in clinical settings for assessing the iron metabolic status of a patient and investigating any pathologies related to iron transport in the blood.
