IgA, IgM / tTG
What is it?
Tissue Transglutaminase Antibodies (IgA, IgM / tTG) are antibodies that the body may develop in response to gluten (found in wheat, barley, and rye), especially with frequent consumption.
Where Used
- For detecting celiac disease before symptoms appear (such as bloating, low B12 levels, etc.)
- For diagnosing and monitoring the treatment of celiac disease
- For ruling out celiac disease in cases of unexplained low levels of vitamin B12 / ferritin
Individuals with a personal or family history of autoimmune diseases, celiac disease, or those who test positive for HLA DQ2 or DQ8 should be particularly aware.
Reference Values -Normal Laboratory :
For adults, the indicative values are:
- Expected Levels in Healthy Individuals: Negative IgA < 10,0 U/ml / IgM < 20 U/ml
- Weakly Positive IgA 10.0 -15,0 / IgM 20-30 U/ml
- Positive IgA > 15,0 / IgM > 30 U/ml

Tissue transglutaminase is an enzyme primarily found in the tissues of the body, particularly in the liver When liver cells are damaged, such as in cases of inflammation or injury, tissue transglutaminase is released into the blood. The increase in tissue transglutaminase levels in the blood can be used as an indicator of potential liver or tissue damage
Testing for antibodies against tissue transglutaminase is a way to check if an individual might have a liver problem. This test detects the presence of antibodies that attack tissue transglutaminase. The presence of these antibodies often indicates an autoimmune reaction against the enzyme, which is usually associated with various liver conditions.
When levels of antibodies against tissue transglutaminase are high, there may be an underlying pathology in the liver. This can be due to factors such as inflammation, hepatitis, infections, alcoholism, autoimmune diseases, or medication-induced liver injury. Additionally, levels of these antibodies can increase during conditions such as pregnancy, thyroid disorders, or even some non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases.
The test for antibodies against tissue transglutaminase is an important tool in the clinical assessment of liver function and in diagnosing potential liver conditions. It is a significant part of overall health screening and can aid in the prevention and management of liver-related diseases.
