What is it?
Rubella (Rubella IgG / IgM) is a virus with high prevalence in the population. Infection with the virus is usually mild and presents with fever and a rash that lasts about 2 to 3 days.
The infection is highly contagious but can be prevented through vaccination.
Where Used
The rubella virus can be easily transmitted through sneezing.
Infection with the virus is mild, with a characteristic red rash on the face and neck that spreads to the body. Other symptoms may include fever, runny nose, red eyes, and joint pain. These symptoms are usually mild to the point that they may not be noticeable.
Possible infection with rubella during the first trimester of pregnancy can cause:
- Miscarriages – fetal death
- Congenital rubella syndrome in the fetus (intellectual developmental disabilities, deafness, eye cataracts, liver, and heart problems)
The Rubella IgM/IgG test detects antibodies against rubella produced by the immune system. It is used for:
- Prenatal screening to determine immunity against the virus (from past infection antibodies: Rubella IgM negative / Rubella IgG positive).
- During pregnancy, if immunity is not detected in the prenatal screening, checking for possible infection during pregnancy with Rubella IgM/IgG antibodies.
PCR may be requested
- for uncertain IgM/IgG results in pregnant women.
Reference Values – Normal Laboratory Ranges
For adults, the indicative values are:
- Immunized from past infection – vaccination: Rubella IgM negative / Rubella IgG positive
- Non-immunized / no exposure to Rubella: Rubella IgM negative / Rubella IgG negative
- Current recent Rubella infection: Rubella IgM positive / Rubella IgG negative or positive
