What are Antithyroid Antibodies?
Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) is an enzyme found in many organs, but primarily within the cells of the liver. Elevated levels may result from a high rate of regeneration or destruction of the cells containing it.
Where Used
It is a test included in general check-ups.
Purpose: detection of liver damage of general etiology, such as:
- Viral infections
- Fatty infiltration
- Autoimmune liver diseases
- Bile duct obstruction
- Toxic / Alcoholic / Drug-induced hepatitis
- Over-exercise with the use of specialized diets and supplements
- Inflammation of adjacent organs (pancreas, gallbladder, intestine)
- Hepatobiliary cancer
It is also used to differentiate the etiology of potential findings of multiple enzymes (Alkaline phosphatase, transaminases) with elevated values.
Reference Values -Normal Laboratory :
For adults, the indicative values are:
Expected levels in healthy individuals:
- Men: 10 – 80 IU/dL
- Women: 10 – 60 IU/dL

Gamma Glutamyl Transferase GGT
The check-up for gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is an important tool for evaluating liver function and the health of other organs. GGT is a type of enzyme found primarily in liver cells, but also in other tissues such as the kidneys, bile ducts, and pancreas. The GGT test measures the levels of this enzyme in the blood and can provide significant information about the health of the liver and the body in general.
During the GGT test, a blood sample is collected from the patient and analyzed for GGT levels. Elevated GGT levels can indicate problems in the liver or other organ systems. While some physiological changes in GGT levels may be normal, a significant increase in this enzyme’s levels can indicate health problems.
Monitoring GGT levels can help prevent or manage liver diseases and related health issues.
Elevated GGT levels can be associated with various conditions, including:
-
Liver Disease: Increased GGT levels can be an indicator of liver disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver.
-
Biliary Tract Diseases: Increased GGT levels can be linked to conditions such as gallstones, cholecystitis, or cholangitis.
-
Alcoholism: Alcoholism is a common factor associated with elevated GGT levels.
-
Bilirubin: Increased GGT levels can also occur in cases of elevated bilirubin levels in the blood.
The GGT test can be an important tool for physicians to evaluate liver function and diagnose potential conditions. The passive voice is used here to emphasize the importance of the test for the patient’s health and the need to monitor GGT levels for the prevention and management of diseases.
