COVID-19 PCR Molecular Test for Coronavirus

What is it:

The COVID-19 PCR Molecular Corona Virus Test is the test for the detection of active infection by the COVID-19 virus. It is a direct test and detects the virus itself during the period of infection, from approximately the 5th day after the first contact, until approximately the 30th day, which is also considered the healing time.

Where it is used:

With data recording that the infection can be asymptomatic up to 80% of the time, the use of the test is mainly for preventive reasons, and secondary for diagnostic purposes.

As a prevention test*is used in asymptomatic patients for:

  • protection of familiar persons
  • scheduled hospital admission or special medical examination
  • safe gathering of large groups of people (camps)
  • issuance of a relevant travel card

*It is necessary to calculate the time of 5 days required after possible contact with the virus, in order to effectively detect the virus.

For example, a new arrival in the country from abroad – without symptoms, it would be good to be checked after a five-day quarantine, so that the time of the trip is included as a detection time.

As a diagnostic test, used to assess symptoms:

  • cold (fever – cough – runny nose)
  • acute cachexia
  • secondary symptoms of infection, such as diarrhea – loss of smell – taste

Sampling:

  • No kind of preparation is required
  • Sampling is done by simply taking a nasopharyngeal smear using a special swab, in a bloodless way and with the least possible discomfort
  • The reception takes place outside the laboratory for the safety of both the examinee and the staff.
02.

Results Time

  • Result: within 24 hours of taking the sample

cost

Private costs single unit analysis (COVID-19 PCR COVID-19 PCR Molecular Test for Coronavirus) is 50 euro.

In a family package, for the second and each additional member, at 45 euros

The exam is NOT prescribed to ΕΟΠΥΥ

IMPORTANT NOTE

The Laboratory performs unit analysis (each sample is analyzed separately) and not with the “pooling” technique (e.g. 5 samples are joined together in one sample to perform only one analysis and give 5 results).

For “pooling” there is no certified diagnostic methodology, and there is always a risk

  • false negative result, especially in cases of low viral load
  • false positive from contaminations due to incorrect handling

The COVID-19 PCR Molecular Test is a leading tool in the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the management of the pandemic. By detecting the genetic material of the virus in the patient’s sample, the PCR test allows accurate prediction of infection and effective management measures.

The PCR test process involves taking a sample from the person’s nasopharynx or pharynx and extracting the genetic material of the virus. The genetic material is then subjected to a series of repeated heating and cooling processes to allow the viral genetic material to replicate and amplify. The corresponding virus genes are identified and confirmed through the PCR process, providing a clear result as to the presence or absence of the virus in the sample.

The accuracy and sensitivity of the PCR test make the process highly reliable for the detection of SARS-CoV-2. However, it is important to note that proper sample collection and processing significantly affect the accuracy of the test. Also, protecting the sample with the proper packaging and transportation is essential to maintain accuracy and avoid possible false negative results.

The PCR test for COVID-19 is also extremely useful for screening people who have developed symptoms or have been exposed to confirmed cases of COVID-19. Rapid diagnosis and prompt isolation of positive individuals are essential to prevent the spread of the virus and protect community health.

The management of PCR test results is crucial for the effective response to the pandemic. In case of a positive result, the patient should immediately isolate and inform their contacts, while they should follow their doctor’s instructions for further management and possible treatment.

In summary, the COVID-19 PCR Molecular Test is a critical tool in the fight against the pandemic, offering accurate and reliable results for the detection of the virus. Through rapid diagnosis and immediate response to positive results, it can help protect public health and reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
