Cancer Alpha-Fetoprotein aFP

What are Antithyroid Antibodies?

Cancer Alpha-Fetoprotein aFP is a test that belongs to the neoplastic markers. These substances are produced by normal cells of the body at some level. When “new” cells appear, then their more intense metabolism produces these substances at elevated levels.

Young cells can be a result of:

  1. Tissue regeneration after some destruction – inflammation
  2. Development of new differentiated pathological or non-pathological tissue
Where Used

The use of a-FP is recommended for monitoring neoplastic disease and assessing the corresponding treatment, primarily in:

  1. Liver
  2. Testes

The marker can also be used similarly in neoplasms of:

Intestine

This test is not included in check-up – screening tests.

Reference Values – Normal Laboratory Ranges

In adults (18-65 years), indicative values are around < 5 μg/L

Elevated a-FP levels can be found in non-cancerous diseases

Liver diseases (hepatitis)

Alpha-fetoprotein (aFP) is a protein mainly produced by the fetal yolk sac and the liver. It is primarily known for its role in diagnosing liver cancer, but it can also increase in other health conditions.

The aFP test is an important examination used to assess potential cancerous conditions and other diseases. Increased aFP concentration in the blood can indicate the presence of liver cancer, especially in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory data. However, high levels are not exclusively indicative of liver cancer and can also increase in other conditions, such as liver cirrhosis, liver inflammation, localized liver nodules, and certain other metabolic disorders.

Beyond liver cancer, aFP measurement can be useful in diagnosing and monitoring other cancers, such as colon cancer, stomach cancer, and testicular cancer. Additionally, aFP measurement can be used to diagnose and monitor metastatic cancer diseases and to assess the response to treatment.

Furthermore, aFP measurement can be used to predict the prognosis of patients with liver cancer and other cancers. High levels of aFP are often associated with poorer prognoses and a higher likelihood of disease recurrence after treatment.

Overall, aFP measurement is an important tool for the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of cancerous and non-cancerous conditions related to the liver and other parts of the body.
