Calcitonin CT

What are Antithyroid Antibodies?

Calcitonin CT is produced by the C-cells of the thyroid and is classified as a marker for thyroid neoplasms.

Cancer markers are produced by normal cells of the body at some level. When “new” cells appear, then their more intense metabolism produces these substances at elevated levels. The young cells may result from:

  1. Tissue regeneration after some destruction – inflammation
  2. Development of new differentiated pathological or non-pathological tissue
Where Used

Neoplasms in the thyroid are relatively rare. Signs of thyroid cancer should not be ignored. The most important of these are:

  1. Thickening – swelling in the front of the neck
  2. Pain in the neck, difficulty swallowing – breathing
  3. Change in voice
  4. Persistent cough that is not from a cold

It is recommended for the check of:

  1. Hyperplasia of thyroid C-cells
  2. Medullary thyroid carcinoma (differential diagnosis, monitoring treatment assessment)

The marker can also be used in the monitoring of lung neoplasms.

The test is not included in check-up – screening tests.

Reference Values – Normal Laboratory Ranges

In adults (18-65 years), indicative values are around < 5,0 pg/mL

Elevated calcitonin levels can be found in non-cancerous diseases.

Calcitonin is a hormone primarily produced by the C-cells of the thyroid. Its main function is to regulate calcium levels in the blood. When calcium levels increase, calcitonin helps to lower them, and when calcium levels decrease, calcitonin helps to increase them.

The measurement of calcitonin can be used as a tool for diagnosing and monitoring various health conditions. One of its main uses is in the diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid cancer, as high concentrations of calcitonin can indicate the presence of this type of cancer.

Apart from thyroid cancer, calcitonin can also be useful in diagnosing and monitoring other cancers, such as lung cancer and breast cancer. Additionally, the measurement of calcitonin can be used for diagnosing and monitoring Paget’s disease, a rare form of skin cancer.

Beyond cancer, calcitonin can also be useful in diagnosing and monitoring hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid produces excessive thyroid hormones. Furthermore, the measurement of calcitonin can be used for diagnosing and monitoring primary hyperparathyroidism, a condition where the parathyroid gland produces excessive amounts of calcitonin without being related to thyroid cancer.

Overall, the measurement of calcitonin can provide significant information about the health of the thyroid and other systems in the body, and can be used as a tool for diagnosing and managing various health conditions.
