What is it?
BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are tumor suppressors that repair damaged DNA to prevent pathological changes in tissues. Mutations in these genes significantly increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
Where Used
Scientific studies indicate that:
- Abnormal forms of BRCA1 BRCA2 occur in about 10% of breast cancers.
- Mutations in the BRCA1 gene have an overall risk of developing the disease of up to 80% at ages up to 90 years.
- Mutations in BRCA1 have also been associated with ovarian cancer with an estimated 55% risk.
- BRCA2 is also involved in its abnormal forms in oncogenesis, with risk rates in ovarian cancer as high as 25%.
- Mutations in the BRCA genes have been associated in men with breast and prostate cancer
- Mutations in the BRCA genes have also been associated with pancreatic carcinomas, leukaemia and lymphomas.
Genetic analysis is recommended for high-risk individuals (carriers of pathogenic mutation(s)). Depending on the results, it is advised that they undergo genetic counseling and adhere to a strict clinical surveillance program with:
- Clinical breast examination, every six months, from the age of 25 years, or annual mammography and/or MRI from the age of 25 years
- Possible choice to undergo a preventive mastectomy taking into account the age of possible breast cancer diagnosis in the patient or in her family history
- Possible option of salpingo-ovarianectomy in women who have already had children

The checkup for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes is an essential part of laboratory checkups that helps assess the risk of developing breast cancer. This checkup focuses on detecting mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are part of the group of genes involved in DNA repair.
The passive voice is used here to highlight the importance of the test for an individual’s health and breast cancer prevention. Detection of mutations in these genes can indicate a higher risk of developing breast cancer.
Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can increase the risk of developing breast cancer and other cancers, such as ovarian cancer. These mutations can be inherited from parents and passed on to their children.
The checkup for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes is usually recommended for individuals with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, as well as those with other risk factors. Identifying these mutations can lead to preventive measures, such as early cancer detection or prophylactic removal of breasts or ovaries.
Overall, the checkup for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes is a vital tool in the prevention and management of breast cancer.
