What is
Allergies occur when the immune system is activated, specifically the immunoglobulins (IgE antibodies), which mistakenly develop against allergens (substances that are not dangerous to the body).
With the specific allergen immunoglobulins RAST (Allergen-Specific Immunoglobulin RAST), the IgE antibodies against a specific allergen are measured.
Where Used
RAST tests are used in cases of diagnosed allergic individuals (with elevated IgE) for:
- Detecting specific allergens causing the allergy so they can be avoided.
- Monitoring the intensity of the allergy against known allergens after a period of preventive avoidance (especially in foods).
However, they can also be used in cases of individuals with relatively low IgE levels when there is suspicion of an allergic reaction to a specific factor.
The selection of RAST tests is made by recording the conditions before the manifestation of an allergic reaction.
The main categories, each containing many independent specialized tests, are:
- Rast G : GRASS FARMING (grass, grass, grass, reeds, oats, oats, rye, corn, etc.)
- Rast W: FIREWORKS (weeds, daisy, daisy, stinging nettle, periwinkle, chamomile, carnation, rose, etc.)
- RAST T: TREE POLLEN (hazelnut, olive, walnut, plane tree, elm, willow, eucalyptus, orange, almond, fir, mulberry, etc.)
- Rast D : ACAREA
- Rast H : POWDER DUST
- Rast B – K – O: FABRICS (linen, wool, silk, latex, cotton)
- RAST F: FOOD (egg, dairy products, cereals, fruits, nuts, vegetables, meat, fish, etc.)
- Rast E : ANIMAL HOSPITALS (cat, dog, horse, cow, goat, goat, rabbit, hamster, chicken, duck, duck, parrot, pigeon, etc.)
- INSECTS (bee venom, wasp venom, fly, mosquito, horsefly, etc.)
- RAST C: MEDICATIONS (various antibiotics: penicillin, erythromycin, amoxicillin, cefaclor, ciprofloxacin, etc.)
Reference Values -Normal Laboratory :
In adults (18-65 years), indicative values are reported at < 2.5 ng/ml

The allergen-specific immunoglobulin RAST (Radioallergosorbent test) is an important tool for the diagnosis and management of allergies. This test allows the detection of immune system reactions to specific substances, such as foods, plants, animals, and airborne allergens.
The RAST test procedure involves analyzing the patient’s blood for the presence of IgE antibodies (immunoglobulins) produced in response to specific allergenic substances. After blood is drawn, the samples are sent to specialized laboratories where they undergo analysis. The reactions of the IgE antibodies with the allergenic substances are evaluated and reported to the patient and their doctor.
The analysis of the RAST test provides significant information about the body’s allergic reactions to specific substances. This enables doctors to predict the body’s reactions and take appropriate preventive measures. Additionally, knowing the allergic reactions to specific substances is vital for preventing serious health effects on the patient.
Managing the results of the RAST test is critical for patient safety. In the case of positive results, the doctor must inform the patient about their allergic reactions and guide them to further tests or treatments. Moreover, it is important to record the allergic reactions in the patient’s medical history to avoid future episodes.
In summary, the allergen-specific immunoglobulin RAST is an essential tool for diagnosing and managing allergies. Through this test, doctors can detect reactions to specific substances and take the necessary measures to address them, thus protecting the health and well-being of patients.
