Oxidative Stress

The antioxidant mechanisms of the body include:

  • the body’s own antioxidants (mainly albumin and uric acid)
  • nutritional trace elements
  • dietary vitamins
  • enzymes

We can act on these mechanisms and strengthen them at the level of nutrition. This is why it makes sense to measure certain parameters (trace elements and vitamins) of the body’s antioxidant capacity.

The measurement of antioxidant trace elements and vitamins is particularly recommended in cases where:

  • the diet is deficient in quality or quantity;
  • exposure to oxidising agents is high (e.g. smokers).
  • the consumption of these vitamins is increased especially in cases of long-term antioxidant intake. formulations – supplements, in order to detect possible toxic overdose.

Vitamin A (retinol). A good source of vitamin A is beta-carotene or provitamin A, which is mainly found in carrots. Powerful antioxidant abilities with regenerative properties in the skin. Hypervitaminosis can be dangerous.

In complex B, the most basic and essential forms are measured:

  • B2 (Riboflavin) Its deficiency causes redness and cracking of the lips, inflammation of the tongue, eye disorders and exfoliative inflammation of the skin. Vitamin B2 deficiency can occur in women during pregnancy and lactation.
  • B9 (folic acid)
  • B12 (Cyanocobalamin) Deficiency can be caused by exclusive vegetarianism or by diseases of the colon (e.g., encephalomyelitis), diseases of the small intestine or stomach and drugs that affect its absorption.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) It is the main water-soluble vitamin that appears to improve vascular function by inhibiting the effects of oxygen free radicals on nitric oxide. Smoking destroys much of the vitamin C in the body.

Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol) Powerful antioxidant vitamin with anti-cancer and protective properties against infections. It regulates the absorption of calcium from the bones and possible lack of it causes a disturbance in the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus, resulting in weak bones. Its measurement is absolutely essential in people with osteoporosis.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol) The main fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin. Avitaminosis E causes sterility in both men and women, as well as tissue damage, particularly nervous and muscle damage. It is given therapeutically in cases of frequent miscarriages and in muscular dystrophy. In studies it appears to help prolong life and also inhibit the deposition of atherosclerotic plaques in the blood vessels.

Selenium (Se) Trace element with strong antioxidant properties. It increases the number of sperm and their motility and reduces the number of sperm with genetic damage. Necessary for testosterone production.

Oxidative stress is a physiological process in our body where the production of free radicals exceeds the body’s ability to eliminate or deal with them. This imbalance between the production and removal of free radicals can lead to damage to the cells and tissues of the body, known as oxidative damage. An important way to assess oxidative stress is through a check-up, which can determine the level of oxidative damage in the body.

1. What is Oxidative Stress: Oxidative stress is a factor caused by a deviation in the balance between antioxidants and free radicals in the body. Free radicals are molecules that contain atomic oxygen and have high chemical activity. When produced at excessively high levels, they can cause damage to cells and tissues.

2. Factors Affecting Oxidative Stress: Oxidative stress can be caused by a number of factors, including smoking, excessive sun exposure, infectious disease, increased body weight and diet.

3. Symptoms of Oxidative Stress: Symptoms of oxidative stress may include fatigue, insomnia, irritability, headaches, insomnia, memory loss and muscle aches.

4. Addressing Oxidative Stress: Addressing oxidative stress often involves taking antioxidant supplements, such as vitamins C and E, along with a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

5. Check-up for oxidative stress: A check-up for oxidative stress may include blood and urine tests to assess levels of antioxidants and oxidative damage in the body. It may also include measuring the level of certain antioxidants, such as glutathione and superoxydases.

In this way, a check-up for oxidative stress can provide important information about the health of the body and help prevent many diseases.
