Breast cancer - Ovarian cancer

TI EINAI (Breast – Ovarian Cancer)

Breast carcinomas are the most common form of cancer among women in developed countries, affecting one in four women, and one in eight with aggressive cancer, according to recent research.

INDICATIONS – MEANING

Key risk indicators are :

  • family history ( to mom, sister, aunt)
  • non-procreation
  • childbearing after the age of 30
  • mutations in the BRCA1 – BRCA2 genes

There are many reports of increased risk in cases of exposure to oestrogen

Low weight, a healthy lifestyle and physical activity can act as a prophylactic against the onset of the disease

LABORATORY TESTING

Neoplasia biochemical markers :

Special series of antigens produced at certain levels by normal tissues. In benign or malignant neoplasms, young cells produce antigens at increased levels due to their higher metabolism.

The tests are used as confirmatory imaging methods, or in disease monitoring.

These are :

  • 15-3 bicarbonate antigen (CA 15-3) for breast
  • Bicarbonate antigen 125 (CA 15-3) for ovaries
  • Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) for breast and ovaries

In cases of serious suspicion of disease, additional tests of the

  • Tissue Polypeptide Antigen (TPA)
  • Specific polypeptide antigen (TPS)
  • Mucin mimetic cancer antigen (MCA)

Gene analysis :

Suitable prevention packages for breast – ovaries, are :

  • Detection of mutations in BRCA 1, BRCA2, BALB2 (c.1100delC mutation)*
  • CANCER PLUS 94 gene package for the detection of carcinogenic genes throughout the body

* GENE DATA – INFORMATION – MANAGEMENT

  • The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes repair damaged regions of DNA (tumour suppressors) to prevent tissue mutations and carcinogenesis.
  • Abnormal forms of BRCA1 BRCA2 occur in about 10% of breast cancers.
  • Mutations in the BRCA1 gene have an overall risk of developing the disease of up to 80% at ages up to 90 years.
  • Mutations in BRCA1 have also been associated with ovarian cancer with an estimated 55% risk.
  • BRCA2 is also involved in its abnormal forms in oncogenesis, with risk rates in ovarian cancer as high as 25%.
  • Mutations in the BRCA genes have been associated in men with breast and prostate cancer
  • Mutations in the BRCA genes have also been associated with pancreatic carcinomas, leukaemia and lymphomas.

High-risk individuals (carriers of pathogenic mutations) are recommended, depending on the results, to undergo genetic counselling and a strict clinical surveillance programme with :

  • Clinical breast examination, every six months, from the age of 25 years, or annual mammography and/or MRI from the age of 25 years
  • Possible choice to undergo a preventive mastectomy taking into account the age of possible breast cancer diagnosis in the patient or in her family history
  • Possible option of salpingo-ovarianectomy in women who have already had children

The costs for the above analyses are:

  • BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2 is 440 euro
  • CANCER PLUS package of 94 genes 690 euro

Ovarian Check Up & Breast Cancer Check Up

Breast cancer and ovarian cancer are two of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. Screening for these cancers is an important factor in their prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women, with millions of cases worldwide every year. Breast cancer screening usually involves mammography, breast examination by doctors or self-examination of the breasts by the women themselves. A mammogram is a special radiological examination used to detect any abnormalities in the breast that may be a sign of cancer. These methods form the basis of prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer.

The equivalent for ovarian cancer is ultrasound of the female abdomen, which can detect abnormalities in the ovaries. Additional evaluation usually includes blood tests, such as cancer marker tests like CA-125, and other special tests if there are symptoms or clinical suspicion.

The Ovarian Check Up & Breast Cancer Check Up is vital, particularly for women at increased risk or with a family history of cancer. This screening allows early detection of any cancer cells or abnormalities in the ovaries or breast, offering more treatment options and increasing the chances of successful treatment of the disease.

In cases where breast or ovarian cancer has been diagnosed, screening is still important. Women who have been treated for breast or ovarian cancer need to have regular check-ups to monitor their progress and detect possible recurrences of the disease. This control helps to provide appropriate treatment and maintain the health and well-being of patients. In addition, women who have had breast cancer surgery may need more frequent follow-up appointments after treatment to ensure full recovery and effective monitoring of their condition.

Overall, the Ovarian Check Up & Breast Cancer Check Up is an important factor in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these cancers. These tests allow early detection of potential problems and provide women with the necessary information and options for their treatment.
