IgG / IgM PCR

Toxoplasma Toxo

Toxoplasma (Toxo IgG / IgM PCR) is a parasite with a high incidence in the population. Infection by the parasite causes flu-like symptoms.

The parasite (Toxo IgG / IgM PCR) can be transmitted by :

  1. contaminated food, especially raw or cooked meat, such as pork, lamb and game
  2. unwashed fruits and vegetables grown in contaminated soil
  3. contact with contaminated soil
  4. contaminated water - unpasteurized milk
  5. contact with contaminated cat litter
  6. transmission from mother to fetus

The cases of toxoplasma can cause health problems are:

  1. Embryos (miscarriage - necrosis)
  2. Newborns, serious conditions shortly after birth, from infection with the virus that has attacked the woman during pregnancy and has passed through the placenta to the fetus (brain development problems, hearing, vision, delayed mental development, pneumonia, enlarged liver, spleen)
  3. Immunocompromised persons (with HIV infection / with immunosuppressive treatment in transplantation / with chemotherapy).

Toxo IgM/IgG tests are used:

  1. In prenatal testing, Toxo IgM/IgG antibodies are performed to see if there will be immunity to the virus (from antibodies from a previous infection (Toxo IgM negative / Toxo IgG positive)
  2. During pregnancy, if an immunity to the virus is not found in prenatal screening, Toxo IgM/IgG antibodies are tested for possible infection during pregnancy

IgM/IgG tests are performed in young or immunocompromised individuals with flu-infectious mononucleosis symptoms, such as:

  • Fatigue, weakness
  • Fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Inflammation in lungs eyes, liver, spleen, gastrointestinal tract

PCR can be requested

  1. in equivocal IgM/IgG results in pregnant women
  2. in newborns who do not have the ability to produce antibodies due to an immature immune system

For adults, the following are applied:

  1. Immunized from past infection: Toxo IgM negative / Toxo IgG positive
  2. Non-immunized / not exposed to Toxo : Toxo IgM negative / Toxo IgG negative
  3. Current/Recent Toxo infection: Toxo IgM positive / Toxo IgG negative or positive
