TIBC Total Iron Binding Capacity TIBC

TIBC Total Iron-Binding Capacity determines the maximum amount of iron that can be bound by serum proteins and is therefore an indirect way of calculating transferrin levels.

The measurement of TIBC is mainly included in the confirmatory analyzes of low Ferritin measurements and the documentation of iron deficiency.

Iron deficiency can result from:

  1. Food low in iron
  2. Gastrointestinal disorders (celiac disease, gastritis, ulcer, gastric bypass, medications, etc.)
  3. Increased needs (pregnancy, childhood, sports - physical exertion)
  4. Increased losses (fibroids, bowel cancers - gynecological, etc.)

Indications of long-term iron deficiency are

  1. Symptoms of anemia, such as looking pale, tiredness, weakness, headaches, feeling cold, shortness of breath on exertion
  2. Hair loss, brittle nails

The measurement of TIBC is also used in toxic loading from iron which shows the following symptoms:

  1. Fatigue, loss of sexual desire
  2. Joint pain, stomach pain
  3. Liver disease, heart problems

For adults (18-65 years), the indicative prices are:

Men: 208-400 µg/dL

Women: 250 - 380 µg/dL

Simple blood collection happens at any time of the day (7.30-19.30)

  1. without restrictions on food from the previous day
  2. without restrictions on possible medication intake
  3. the result is not affected of any existing transient illness - cold

The result is given after 6:00 pm for blood draws until 11:00 am

Possibility of urgent response in about 1 hour

The private cost of an individual test (TIBC Total Iron Binding Capacity) is 20 euros*.

The examination is prescribed at the EOPYY**, with the participation of the examinee as defined in the referral (15%, unless otherwise stated)
