Selenium (Se) is one of the most important trace elements - minerals of the body, with strong antioxidant properties, and participates in several physiological functions, the main ones being:

• Immune regulation
• Regulation of reproduction mechanisms
• Tissue protection from oxidative stress damage

Selenium analysis is recommended in conditions that may create a deficiency

It is mainly caused by:

1. low intake of it in eating disorders
2. malabsorption (gastrointestinal operations - celiac disease - gastritis)
3. increased physical needs

High levels of selenium are rarely seen, and are indicated by loss of hair and nails

For adults, the following are applied:

Expected levels in healthy people 46-143 µg/ml

A simple morning blood draw (7.30-9.30 am), without food preparation or avoiding taking widely used drugs

Avoid selenium supplements for 72 hours
