The Hepatitis B Test - Australian HBsAg is the test to detect active hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It detects the virus itself in the phase of pro-infection as well as in the phase of the chronic carrier. It is the test for the detection of active infection by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It detects the virus itself in the pro-infection phase as well as in the chronic carriage phase

The validity of the test exists for sampling times of at least 2-3 weeks after the time of possible contact - infection (time window). In this time practically the copies of the virus have reached detectable levels (reliability > 99%)

The use of the test is mainly for preventive, but also for diagnostic purposes

As a prevention test is used:

1. in the early diagnosis of HBV infection, for immediate effective treatment
2. between sexual partners to avoid transmission from a non-diseased carrier
3. in educating younger people about their vigilance against apparently healthy carriers
4. in the prenatal and pre-surgical check-ups to take appropriate measures in time

As a diagnostic test for HBV infection, attention should be paid to

1. Α possible positive result, where confirmation with HBeAg AntiHBcore IgG-IgM tests or molecular biology HIV PCR tests is required to avoid false positive results
2. A negative result, where the sample was taken near the time window, and a repeat with the same method may be required after some time
3. a negative result, where there is very strong evidence of active HBV infection, and confirmation with a molecular biology HBV PCR test is required

In non-immunosuppressed adults, a negative result against positive and negative control serum is indicative.

Simple blood collection at any time of the day, without preparing food or avoiding medication.
