Glycosylated Hemoglobin HbA1c

Glycosylated Hemoglobin HbA1c is the hemoglobin that has been glycosylated, a chemical process made by the presence of sugar, in an amount proportional to the concentration of blood sugar.

HbA1c hemoglobin is used as a measure of average sugar levels over the past 2 months.

The relative diagram that appears lower in the values, approximates the values of glycosylated with the levels of the morning fasting sugar.

Glycated hemoglobin HbA1c can be used:

  1. in the diagnosis of diabetes
  2. in monitoring diabetes treatment

It should be used with special care in:

  1. particular hemoglobin subtypes (e.g. β-thalassemia)
  2. ferrum deficiency anemia or vitamin B12 deficiency
  3. chronic nervous - liver disease
  4. children and teenagers

It should not be used in cases of:

  1. diabetes due to pregnancy
  2. recent transfusion

For adults, the following are applied:

  • Expected levels in healthy people : ​​<​​ 6.0%
  • A good value in diabetics: ​​< 6.5

The obtained results obtained depend on alternative methods that can range from reliable to unreliable (especially from mono-test / small-size analyzers).
