The Hepatitis C Anti-HCV antibody test is the test to detect hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. It is an indirect test and detects the antibodies that the body develops against the virus.

The validity of the test exists for sampling times at least 10-12 weeks after the time of possible contact - infection (time window). At this time practically the copies of the virus have reached detectable levels (> 95% confidence)

The use of the test is mainly for preventive, but also for diagnostic purposes

As a prevention test is used:

1. in the early diagnosis of HCV infection, for immediate effective treatment
2. between sexual partners to avoid transmission from a non-diseased carrier
3. in educating younger people about their vigilance against apparently healthy carriers
4. in the prenatal and pre-surgical check-ups to take appropriate measures in time

As a diagnostic test for HCV infection, attention is needed to

1. A possible positive result, where confirmation with HCV PCR molecular biology tests is required to avoid false positives
2. A negative result, where the sample was taken near the time window, and a repeat with the same method may be required after some time
3. a negative result, where there is very strong evidence of active HCV infection, and confirmation by HCV PCR molecular biology test is required

In non-immunosuppressed adults, a negative result against positive and negative control serum is indicative.

Simple blood collection at any time of the day, without preparing food or avoiding medication.
